Values / Respect

Respect

Treating someone as a person with their own standing, boundaries, and reasons, whether or not you agree with them.

What this value tries to protect

The dignity of people you have power over, and the possibility of disagreement that does not become contempt.

Healthy expressions

  • Arguing with someone's strongest version, not their weakest.
  • Keeping a confidence you were trusted with.
  • Asking rather than assuming what someone needs.

Possible overextensions

  • Politeness that refuses to name a real harm.
  • Deferring to status rather than to reasons.
  • Treating disagreement itself as disrespect.

Common tensions

Questions worth sitting with

  • Who do you find it hardest to take seriously, and why?
  • When has being polite stopped you saying something true?
  • Whose boundary have you treated as negotiable?

Respect is often reduced to manners, which makes it sound optional. It is closer to a claim about standing: that the person in front of you gets to have reasons, limits, and a say, independent of how convenient that is for you.
