Values / Care for Nature

Care for Nature

Treating the living world as something owed care, not only as material for our use.

What this value tries to protect

Conditions that outlast us, and the interests of people and creatures who cannot argue for themselves.

Healthy expressions

  • Accepting a real inconvenience for a distant benefit.
  • Repairing rather than replacing.
  • Counting a cost that lands on people not yet born.

Possible overextensions

  • Moralising about choices only the comfortable can make.
  • Treating symbolic effort as sufficient.
  • Valuing an abstract future over a person in front of you.

Common tensions

Questions worth sitting with

  • Which of your habits would you defend to someone living with their consequences?
  • When is an environmental cost worth paying, and who gets to decide?
  • What are you asking of others that you have not asked of yourself?

Care for nature is the value where the gap between what people say and what they do is widest, and where scolding works least well. The honest version starts by admitting that most of the trade-offs are genuinely uncomfortable.
