Values / Achievement
Achievement
Doing something well enough that it holds up, and building the competence to do it again.
What this value tries to protect
Work that genuinely serves the people relying on it, and a life with something in it you are glad you made.
Healthy expressions
- Doing the unseen part properly.
- Wanting to be good at something for its own sake.
- Finishing rather than perpetually preparing.
Possible overextensions
- Measuring your worth by your output.
- Spending people to reach a milestone.
- Chasing the marker instead of the thing it marked.
Common tensions
Questions worth sitting with
- What are you good at that nobody is measuring?
- What has your ambition cost someone other than you?
- If nobody knew you had done it, would you still want to?
Achievement gets treated as suspect, as though wanting to be good at something were vanity. The healthy version is quieter than the performance of it: caring whether the work actually holds, whoever notices.
