Values / Freedom

Freedom

Being able to steer your own life, and leaving others room to steer theirs.

What this value tries to protect

The capacity to author your own choices, and the dignity of being treated as someone who can decide.

Healthy expressions

  • Letting someone make a decision you think is wrong.
  • Saying no without needing to justify it fully.
  • Building a life that is yours rather than inherited.

Possible overextensions

  • Treating every obligation as an imposition.
  • Calling avoidance independence.
  • Forgetting that your choices land on other people.

Common tensions

Questions worth sitting with

  • Which of your freedoms rests on someone else's constraint?
  • When did choosing for yourself cost someone you love something real?
  • What would you refuse to give up, even for people you owe?

Freedom is easiest to defend in the abstract and hardest in particular cases, because most real freedoms are held inside relationships that also make claims on us. The interesting question is rarely whether people should be free. It is what we owe the people our freedom touches.
